Trip to Steinavær

Steinavær or "Steine" is an archipelago located in Andfjorden, between Senja and Andøy. "Styrmansholmen" is the biggest of the islands and where the main harbor is located.

Steinavær and other groups of islands in the area were populated in order to shorten the distance to the fishing grounds and its rich abundances of cod. Large breakwaters turned weather-exposed natural harbors into quiet lagoons in the middle of the ocean. As boats got bigger and sails and oars were replaced with engines, people took buildings and houses with them and moved closer to the mainland, most of them to Senja. Steinavær had a permanent settlement until 1912, and was completely abandoned in 1914. Foundations, wells, pier foundations, small roads, and quarries can still be seen on the islands making it easy to imagine the hard way of life that took place there more than a century ago.

Skrolsvik was an active fishing village until the early 1990's. There were two reception centers for fish which shut down in 1992. The halibut fishery has strong traditions at Skrolsvik, and the the rich halibut fishery in Andfjorden created the fishing village. In the 1930's, the harbor was filled with boats fishing halibut. The fishing boats came from the communities in the surrounding area, from all of Troms county and as far south as from Lofoten. The first fish reception center was built in 1872, and at the same time Skrolsvik became a trading place. 

Skrolsvik today is well known for its great fishing opportunities. Skrolsvik is especially known for its rich occurrences of halibut, and has become famous for being a top location for halibut angling. There is also an halibut museum in skrolsvik.

Kveitvad is a type of long line fishing equipment specially designed for catching halibut.

Bird Watching

Just across the fjord from Skrolsvik is the Sundsvollsundet Nature Reserve. Located on the southern side of Helløya it is approximately 20 min with boat from Skrolsvik.

The nature reserve was established on June 4, 2004 to provide protection for the bird mountain and its wildlife. The western part of the area is home to the largest colony of crutches in Troms. European shag , European herring gull and Black guillemot are other species of birds that have habitats in the nature reserve.

Lavvu Tent

We have a sami style lavvu tent on-site at Skrolsvik Kystferie. The lavvu is located secluded from any nearby population and light pollution. Walking distance from accommodation units ( aprox 200 - 400 meters )

Can be used in combination with observing the northern lights. ( if the sky is clear there is not really any need for chasing the lights, sitting put and just waiting for it coming to you works just as well )

The Lavvu can also be used for overnight sleeping

With it´s mix of high mountains and friendly scenery, Southern Senja is great for photographing landscapes, birds, animals, flowers, northern lights

Nature and Hiking

Senja is an eldorado for hiking. There are  good marked trails in the area, both easy and demanding trails.

Northern Lights

Skrolsvik Kystferie is located in good distance from nearest town and distracting city ligths. You can watch the aurora from right outside the door.

You won't have to walk or drive far to find complete darkness for a great aurora experience.
